Memoars from The Alchemist

It all started with as a gift, that later came to be one the most retargeted readings of mine, The Alchemist by the well known author, Paulo Coelho.

Every reading experience is unique to each person, due to experiences, interpretations, understandings and much more, but what I do believe is that this is a story that may make sense for everyone in some way, wherever they may be on their personal journey. The pages in my copy are about to loosen, and the grafit marks are more than many, because each time I pick up the story, I am taken by surprise of some new moment of deeper understanding.

The Alchemist is about following one’s dream and purpose in life, covered in story of a young Andalusian Shepherd, on his journey to realize his destiny. From his home in Southern of Spain, he journeys to North Africa, and in to the Egyptian desert, for an encounter with the Alchemist. It’s the story of having the courage not only to discover one’s dream, but to act up on it. Here is my chosen piece of arts from the story.

Listen to your heart
“Even if you pretend not to have heard what it tells you, it will always be there inside you, repeating to you what you’re thinking about life. People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them. Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of it’s dreams. Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure. You’ve got to find the treasure, so that everything you have learned along the way can make sense.”

To realize one’s destiny, is a person’s only real obligation
“When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream. In alchemy, it’s called the Soul of the World. When you want something with all your heart, that’s when you are closest to the Soul of the World. It’s always a positive force. Learn to recognize omens, and follow them. Omens are this strange, but very individual language that guides you towards your own destiny. They are not logical. They talk to your heart directly.”

Making a decision is only the beginning of things
“When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he had never dreamed of when he first made the decision.”

I don’t live in either my past or my future
“I’m interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always in the present, you will be a happy man. If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And if you improve on the present, what comes later will also be better. Each day, in itself, brings with it an eternity.”

Pursuing one’s destiny
“You must understand that love never keeps a person from pursuing one’s destiny. One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving.”
