Bohemian Decor

Justina Blakeney is a designer, artist, and author of the book The New Bohemians, sharing bohemian design and free-spirited inspiration for adding good vibes in your home, and making design easy, fun, accessible, affordable, and soulful.

In The New Bohemians Handbook a five-step process for manifesting your dream home is revealed, including clarity, flow, spirit, growth, and harmony.

Clean up and let the sunshine in

The first step is all about achieving clarity, and to bring an understanding of your needs and desires, and setting intentions for creating a beautiful and nourishing environment. What do you want to call in and how do you want to feel in your home? This step also includes clearing, decluttering, and removing old stuff that doesn’t serve your wellbeing any longer or hold any lower vibrations (unpleasant sights, sounds, smells, feelings, memories, or associations). Open up all of the windows, air out your space and make a deep cleaning. Purge any stagnant energy with an air purifier such as sage or palo santo.

Intention, needs and desires. What is your overall vision for your living space? The intentions is the structure from where you work your design and you may be setting an intention for a loving creating energy, a home condusive to art and creativity, a home that contributes to the spiritual development of all occupants, etcetera.

Arranging your environment to enable your vision

The next step is about creating flow. Say goodbye to cluttered spaces, crowded hallways, and no flow furnishing. All doors should be able to swing wide open and your space should be open to move around easily without bumping in to furnitures or other stuff. Think about all rooms in the home. Would any room support your routines better, dedicated for other use? An empty closet may be transformed into a work space for your home business, or the spare room may be transformed into a walk-in closet? Bigger rooms can also be divided into zones or smaller rooms. The most important thing is that the overall space enables your vision.

Finding your spirit environment

After having achieved clarity and arranged the energy to flow, it’s time to dive deeper and awaken your spirit. What are the sights, sounds, smells, textures, and tastes that nourishes your soul? Do you have a spirit animal, symbol, or plant present in your home already? This is your soul environment and the reflection of who you are. Here are a few examples of how we may feel with different elements of nature.

Desert: Warm, calm, serene, sunny, bright
Beach: Relaxing, energizing, refreshing, cleansing, rhythmic
Mountain: Serene, pristine, cozy, fresh, quiet, verdant

Choosing the right colors enables you to apply its frequency vibration which can assist you in creating and supporting your vision and raising your vibration through colors can bring wonderful change to your home environment and wellbeing.

Breath life into your space with plants

It’s all about growth. Plants can serve as window treatments, sculptures, room dividers, air purifiers, etc. They can thrive all over the place, and will provide comfort and a feeling of connecting with nature, as soon as they are placed in the right direction.

Creating overall balance

Harmonizing and balancing aesthetics such as colors, patterns, textures, focal points and other decorative elements. For you it may be a favorite kelim carpet, a harmonious photography, a soothing soundtrack, supportive crystals, flower arrangements, or other elements of Feng Shui.
